The station was built on the site of Johnstown, a small community of about 30 African American families originally settled in 1912. The properties were acquired in the early 1980s and the houses razed to make way for the station.[1] The station opened in 1984 when the northeast (now Gold) line was extended from Arts Center to Brookhaven/Oglethorpe.
Lenox has both a parking lot (193 spaces) and parking deck (128 spaces) for MARTA patrons. Daily parking (less than 24 hours) is free in both the lot and deck; long term parking is charged at US$5 per day, including the first day and is only available in the parking deck.
